Pirarucu Fish's Leather from Amazon Rooms in Haute Couture

Manaus, Dec. 15th (EFE) - The pirarucu, a giant fish in the Amazon and one of the largest of freshwater in the world, will have its leather used as raw material for the production of bags and shoes of Haute Couture.

The fish is famous for its size - it can reach three meters in length and 250 kg in weight - and for its meat taste, soft and delicious and, moreover, has few thorns.
Six years ago, the scales of the pirarucu also become raw material, often unknown to the creation of accessories used by many women in fashion capitals like Paris. A forestry engineer Rose Day, the National Institute for Amazonian Research (INPA) and one of the owners of the company Green Obsession, told Efe as this project was born, by the hands of the government agency, to create an innovative fashion brand that "gives value" to the Amazon. "The philosophy of being just one more is not interesting for us. We have the distinction of being environment friendly and to use forest management, forest surplus, avoiding forest devastation. The pirarucu is an endangered fish, wich fishing is banned in Brazil. It can only be obtained in conservation units and nurseries, always under supervision of the supervisory bodies of the environment. Rose said his company tries to give priority to local communities, many of which live exclusively on fishing, but also acquire the leather from food-related companies that have their own farms. Traditionally, the pirarucu used to be roasted and "nothing left" of leather. But after being traded by large companies, all skin began to be discarded, according to the engineer. So INPA thought that this material, which represents 10% of the weight of the animal, could be useful generating more income for the chain.

The leather of this fish has advantages over the bovine. It holds more tension, because its fibers are intertwined, while the skin of bovines are arranged in parallel, according to studies of INPA. The company also uses other fish in the region, as the peacock bass, an fish of intermediate size, between 30 centimeters and one meter in length. In total, seven people work in the company regularly. However, depending on demand, more employees are hired. The labor force is recruited in poor communities, where the company offers training courses , required for the manufacture of parts because it is more difficult due to the characteristics of animals. "You have to know how to work the fish, since the size is much more difficult than the bovine leather and requires many parts to be sewed by hand," explained Rose. The Green Obsession already produces an average of 200 pieces per year, including shoes and handbags. The company's products have found buyers in cities like Sao Paulo and Belo Horizonte.

In addition, the company exports its products to France, Italy, United States and Canada, thanks to contacts made at the Amazon International Fair, held annually in Manaus, as well as by requests made by professionals in the fashion industry that made tourism in the region.

CLAUDIA TREVISAN - Estado Agency

BEIJING - Brazil and China held last month the first financial transaction directly in the currencies of two countries, without conversion to the dollar. The Brazilian subsidiary of a manufacturer of air conditioners - Gree - sent almost R$ 1 million to his parent company through the Bank of China, who received the money in Real and delivered in Yuan three days later at an agency in Guangdong province. Typically, international transactions are made in convertible currencies such as dollar or euro, but China is on a drive to expand the use of Yuan out of its borders.

On his visit to Beijing in May, President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva argued that trade between two countries be conducted in national currencies, without intermediate conversion to U.S. dollars. Transaction of Gree aimed to pay for imports of parts for its plant in Zona Franca de Manaus, where he is since 1999.

The vice-president of Bank of China in Brazil, Xiao Qi, told the official news agency Xinhua that the use of currencies of the countries involved in the operation reduces the risk associated with fluctuating exchange rates. In his assessment, other Chinese companies with operations in Brazil will prefer to settle their shipments to China with the direct conversion of real to yuan, without going through the dollar.

This is the second consecutive year that the company appears in the research.

Employing more than ten thousand employees at its factory in the Industrial Pole of Manaus, and have launched in March the first flex-fuel motorcycle in the world (CG 150 Titan Mix), Honda received the award on Tuesday (1st), in Sao Paulo .

By working with both alcohol and gasoline, the model is friendly to the environment. This is because, when compared to gasoline, ethanol has the advantage of being a source of renewable energy and cleaner. Thanks to the success of CG 150 Titan Mix, Honda launched in October the NXR Bros Mix, first motorcycle category on-off road that runs on ethanol, gasoline or a mixture of both in any proportion.

By Gerusa Marques

Brasília - Nokia has launched today a digital TV receiver for mobile phone compatible with the technological system developed in Brazil from the Japanese standard for digital television. The equipment will be released in conjunction with the mobile phone Nokia N85, but next year will be sold separately to be used with other Nokia phones. From next Monday, the receiver and the N85 phone will be on sale at the Nokia store on the Internet for a total price of US$ 1599. In the second week of December, the product will be available at retail.

The software of the receiver model SU-33Wb was developed by Brazilian researchers at Nokia Institute of Technology, in Manaus. The receiver will also be released for mobile phones Nokia N97 and 5800 Comes With Music, in the first half of 2010.

The receiver is synchronized with the phone through bluetooth technology. With this the receiver can operate at a distance of 10 meters of the phone, which ensures higher quality signal in places where reception is difficult. The digital TV reception on your phone is to add value to equipment used to make calls and access the internet.

The global vice president of Corporate Relations and Responsibility of Nokia, Esko Aho, who also attended the launch in Brasilia, said the mobile Internet has more growth potential than the connection in the fixed network. He estimated that in 2013 the mobile Internet users will be 770 million worldwide, representing 21% of all cell phones.

Brazilian trade can give a lift to the economic fortunes of Region 10, through distribution depots and trading bonds for retailers/wholesalers in industrial and domestic supplies, if the opportunity is grabbed, especially, by the region’s centre, Linden.

Guyana with a country size of 83,000 sq miles has capitalized on its proximity to Brazil through the Takutu Bridge that links the border town of Lethem with the Brazilian border town Bom Fin and the rest of the country, and the Brazil/Lethem road. The town of Linden, which already has an established infrastructure, but an ailing economy (due to its heavy dependence on bauxite mining) is strategically placed along the road route to take advantage of the traffic that passes through the town.

However, it seems that the magnitude of the possibilities of trade with Brazil has not yet consumed many Linden businesses, and some have only lightly considered the possibilities (Read more)

Russia is considering ways to discourage speculative currency traders from driving up the ruble exchange rate, including a tax on cross-border currency transactions, a central-bank official said Thursday. Such a plan would put Russia in line with other commodity-exporting economies including Brazil and Indonesia, which view inflows of speculative money as a threat to the profitability of their raw-materials exporters.

In Brazil, Thursday was the effective date of the government's new tax on Brazilian stocks traded as American depositary receipts. Brazilian Finance Minister Guido Mantega has said the 1.5% tax on ADRs is part of a bigger effort to stem appreciation of the real, which has gained 36% against the dollar so far this year.
